Film: The Iron Wall
Time: 6:30 pm
Event Description: Monday, March 8, 6:30 pm, The Iron Wall: West Bank Bantustans in the Monterey Library Community Room.
This week is recognized abroad as International Israeli Apartheid Week to call attention to a situation which Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela describe as more brutal than the South African system of Apartheid under which they lived. Israel’s illegal colonization of Palestinian territory in the West Bank is making--or has already made--a peace settlement impossible. Half a million Israelis live in Jewish-Only settlements and drive on Jewish-Only Superhighways built on Palestinian land, while Palestinians have been forced into ghettos cut off from their farm land and surrounded by The Wall. This endeavor is largely financed by American taxpayers. The U.S. Congress is expected to approve a $30 billion "aid package" to Israel, which will consist largely of military hardware bought from U.S. arms manufacturers with dollars from U.S. taxpayers. After the 52-minute film, a discussion will be led by Fouad Khatab, M.A. candidate in International Policy Studies & Conflict Resolution, at Monterey Institute of International Studies and president of Friends of the Middle East at MIIS. The New Direction Film Series is a project of the Monterey Peace and Justice Center. Information: 238-6675.
